The book lover's Chronicles

I love reading... I might not be the fastest reader and I can take a long time to read a book but I love being transported in a book and trying to understand, grow to love and befriend the characters in the different stories that I discover. I love that you can move from world to world in a second and unravel new adventures. The bottom line is I'm a passionate reader and I love books!

A new Bout of Books read-a-thon is back!

So it's read-a-thon time again. I can't believe it's already been a year since I first started participating in these events that bring all the reading community together. So today I'm excited to share with you the Bout of Books read-a-thon 11 coming up on August 18th and ending on August 24th. It's a great way to encourage everybody to read instead of watching a "not so normal" amount of TV shows and whatnot.

Here's a small text talking about what these read-a-thons are:

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 18th and runs through Sunday, August 24th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 11 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

Re-title it! Read-a-thon daily challenge

So today's Bout of Books read-a-thon's challenge is to retitle the book you're reading and I think it's an awesome idea!

So I'm currently reading Watchmen by Alan Moore.

I would re-name it the Vigilante Squad. I've always been bad at giving title but I wanted to try this challenge out.

If you're participating in the read-a-thon you should definitely check out the daily challenges.

The dog days of summer read-a-thon!

I was watching a video filmed by Andi who's an awesome blogger and booktuber and she was announcing her participation in The dog days of summer read-a-thon that's being hosted by the Estella society (http://www.estellasociety.com/). It's a 48h read-a-thon that starts on Saturday the 17th and ends on Sunday the 18th. It also has a theme and it's basically reading books that make you feel nostalgic and remind you of a a certain point in your life. It can be a re-read or other books by an author that you loved when you were younger. Look at you bookshelf and be creative!
I chose two books:
- The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm
- The Dictionary of Mythology

I've never read the Grimm fairy tales before so that was an opportuinity for me and then I've been obsessed with Greek mythology from when I was 11 years old.

Hope you join in on this read-a-thon!

The Spy Who Loved Me - Review

The Spy Who Loved Me (James Bond, #10) - Ian Fleming, Nick Stone

So let me start of by saying that the book was enjoyable and fun but it lacked a couple of things in my opinion. First of all I would have given it a better rating if I wasn't such a diehard fan of the James Bond movies and if The Spy Who Loved Me wasn't an exceptional movie (not my favourite but very close).
So let's talk about the plot. The story is told from the Point of view of one of the main characters, Vivian Michael. We get to know her background, where she's from etc., but there's a focus on her love life and her heart-breaks. And those heart-breaks lead her to Canada and then to the US were the important part of the story happens. She finds herself at a small motel where things go for the worst.

I didn't mind her even though sometimes she felt a bit whiny and too naive. But you could relate to her specially with her failed relationships because let's face it we've all been through those. And I thought the story was not that bad even though the movie's premise was far more exciting and completely different. However there were 2-3 things that really annoyed me. First of all, James Bond doesn't appear till about 45% of the book. Being a James Bond book I would have expected him to appear sooner or to be mentioned at least during the first half of the book. Secondly he was so rusty. He was not the Bond that I expected and that all the Bond lovers enjoy and want to see. And he even says it in the book that he's losing his touch and I totally agree. It was also missing the gadgets that make the man. And lastly, the book was so slow pace during the first half talking about Viv's personal life and her relationships and all the action starts at the second half of the book and that's when it gets exciting and fast pace. I wish there were more of that and earlier in the book.

I would recommend it but only if you haven't seen the movie yet because you'll dive into this book with very high exceptions concerning Bond specially and you will probably be disappointed.

Reading slump

Honestly I thought that when it was finally summer and I had no more classes or exams that I would definitely read more. However, I don't have class anymore and I have all the time in the world and I'm still not reading much. Actually I was reading more back when I was in school. I really want to read I get all excited about reading and then I remember something I saw on the internet , or a youtube video I really want to see or watching a new episode of Gilmore Girls (my new old obsession).

Then I watched this video by Amira (http://www.youtube.com/user/AmirasBookReviews) and apparently she's in the same slump as me. She suggested a couple of things that I found very useful.

1- To set a goal.
She was talking about setting a goal of books you want to read during the summer however I'm going to set a daily amount of pages I want to read.
2- Read shorter book.
I'm going to try reading a couple of light reads nothing too complicated and more on the lines of beach reads.

3- To read outside.

Here in Montreal the weather hasn't been that great and it's been raining for about a week but I decided to go read in a cafe and get out of the house where there is no internet connection or a tv to distract me.

I hope I'll finally be able to get through my current book.

Is someone out there relating to the way I feel about reading?

Amazing

Fables: Legends in Exile - Alex Maleev, James Jean, Bill Willingham

I absolutely loved this comic book and can't wait to read the next volume. It's mixed in with some humor, murder mystery, drama and action. I would recommend it to anyone. It's also perfect if you don't have much time on hand and want to read something very entertaining and quick. Anyways bottom line is that I loved it and I'll definitely be finishing this series maybe during the Bout of Books read-a-thon in August.

Graphic Novels - Scott Pilgrim

Scott Pilgrim & the Infinite Sadness - Bryan Lee O'Malley

I love the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley. They're very fast and entertaining.

If you don't know what they're all about, here's a very short summary.
So Scott Pilgrim is an 20 something rock band member. He meets this woman named Ramona and wants to date her. But in order to persue this relationship he needs to fight her 7 evil ex-boyfriends and that's basically what he does in th 6 books in this series.
It's funny, dorky at times and always fun. That's why I love it so much.

I'll probably finish the series (last 3 books) in the Bout of Books August Marathon (can't wait for that)!

Anyways great book and I would definitely recommend the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley.
